cosmetic surgery safety

Today's CJ has an article on cosmetic surgery from the safety standpoint. I agree with some of its points, ie select a real plastic surgeon...someone who is board certified in plastic surgery, not some pretender. I respectfully disagree with some of my colleagues who imply tummy tucks need an overnight stay in a hospital. My experience, and I've done hundreds if not thousands of these types of operations since we opened our office surgery suite over 6 year ago, is that patients do BETTER at home. I routinely do multiple procedures, ie liposuction and breast augmentation...which takes about 2 hours...and send the patient home. Everyone is aware of the problems in hospitals with drug-resistant bacteria, overworked nurses, etc. And I always insist on an adult at home with the patient attending to them. I also searched the plastic surgery data and found articles confirming my point above. Don't get me wrong, if you have general anesthesia for 4-6-8 hours, you probably should be in a facility overnight...but not for a routine 2-3 hour tummy tuck done with sedation and local.

Since the Donde West incident, I've seen some surgeons on TV claim to do only one procedure at a time...more nonsense, related to the same reason as above. I think patients ought to ask not only about training, certification, experience, etc...but also about anesthesia (general or sedation and local) and how long the procedure will take. Now I know some surgeons are going to claim it takes them so long because they are so precise yada yada yada...total bullshit. Famous saying from surgery...you can be a fast bad surgeon, or a slow bad surgeon, or a fast good surgeon, but there is no such thing as a slow good surgeon. I am not saying your surgeon should hurry...every good plastic surgeon knows to not stop the procedure until he/she is satisfied, but we all know people who tinker needlessly without moving forward. 'nuf said.

question for clients

I have a question for anyone considering cosmetic surgery (breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck, facelift, whatever). It seems most of people's hesitancy to this is financial...that is what is borne out in most surveys. So in this relatively slow time of year, we often offer incentives for those interested. Usually we offer $250 off the usual fee if you schedule your procedure by Dec 31, 2007...the surgery can be anytime within the next 60 days, but you must schedule by 12/31/07.

What do people think of that amount? Is it enough to motivate you to commit to your surgery? Any response is appreciated. Thanks.

Video of breast augmentation

We're working on posting a video of a breast augmentation I recently did here in the office. We're also putting it on 'youtube'. Of course we filmed it with my home-video camera and the production values are amateurish at best. If you're squeamish about blood or surgery, don't watch it.

I thought everyone had enough exposure to this stuff with all the plastic surgery TV shows. But when I asked people, everyone said they would be interested in something like that.

At least you can see the operating room where we do all our cosmetic surgery, ie liposuction, tummy tucks, face lifts, etc.
